Q1 WHY IS VC BEHAVING THIS WAY TO A WOMAN!?
“I don’t understand what VC was trying to do. I just don’t!”
“Is he out if his mind!?”
These are some of the remarks given by people after watching the movie.. and this is exactly why I consider Kaatru Veliyidai a good movie!
That is VC. These are his characteristics. Many can’t and don’t understand. Many won’t even like him. This is what people have been saying. Should we brand this a good movie then? Because it triggered the question that it intended to. Had his character has shades of goodness, the movie would have become a hit. But not many resonate with what he is and hence the movie just becomes a ‘good movie’.
Q2 WHY IS HE BEHAVING LIKE A MALE CHAUVINIST? WHY IS THE MOVIE GLORIFY MALE CHAUVINISM?
VC is not a male chauvinist. Chauvinism and male ego are two different things. Varun is full of ego. Ugly ego. A chauvinist wouldn’t tell a woman ‘You are much bigger than me!’ A chauvinist wouldn’t tell a woman ‘I can’t live without you!’ Varun is egoistic. Varun is an emotional idiot. An attention seeker. He loves everything to be about him. Varun isn’t chauvinistic. He has a higher degree of male ego.
Kaatru Veliyidai doesn’t have a narrow story line. It revolves around VC. So it becomes necessary to understand him and travel with him for a few hours.
Q3 WHY AM I TRYING TO DEFEND MANIRATNAM!?
I’m not trying to defend Maniratnam. I’m just extending my support to a well written movie like Kaatru Veliyidai. And I strongly believe these kind of movies need the support.
Q4 WHY DO YOU CALL IT WELL WRITTEN WHEN MOST OF THE PEOPLE SAY THAT IT IS NOT!?
I would like answer this with a few examples –
Example 1 :
To give an introduction about VC’s character (Self Centered)
(Fighter Pilot believes in only one thing SELF!) and he starts the plane.
Example 2 :
The scene where one of his colleagues talks about his first enemy contact (Conversation between two fighter pilots of INDIAN AIR FORCE)
Colleague ‘I was nervous. A direct contact with the enemy, For the first time! For a moment I thought that he is also a human being just like me.’
VC ‘You are not Arjuna & I’m not Krishna. This isn’t Kurukshetra. This is Kargil…’
And what’s the motto of IAF!?
“The motto of IAF has been taken from Eleventh Chapter of The Bhagavadgita! The discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna.” (Check IAF Website for clarity)
VC continues by saying ‘You need not worry about your enemy being good or bad. That will be decided by his creator. He will take care of it. Our job is simply to arrange the meeting as soon as possible!’
And these are the words by US Army General Norman Schwartzkof. In an interview when he was asked if he thought there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harboured and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on America. His answer was “I believe that forgiving them is God’s function. Our job is simply to arrange the meeting.”
A Fighter Pilot of IAF contradicting IAF’s motto and following an ideology by an US Army General!?
Wait… The writer did not give a reason. He did not tell whether this is right or wrong. Ethical or unethical. He just wants us to explore.
Example 3 :
Listen to the Vaan Varuvaan again.. If you pay attention to this one song, you will unravel the crux of the whole movie.
How can Vairamuthu be so harsh to Maniratnam? Explaining the whole movie in just a few lines!? Maybe that’s why Maniratnam likes working with Vairamuthu. Just like he is making movies for us even when we were rude to him a lot of times!
Example 4 :
When VC introduces his mother to Leela he says- ‘
(Meet my mother, the one who nurtured me with Fish Curry and Bharathi)
This dialogue has a higher level of significance because a mother who reads Bharathi and believes in Bharathi wouldn’t bring a change within her family itself. She couldn’t change her husband. (VC’s father, who is also a self centered man but blames VC for being one. Whom VC later says is unfit to become a father.)
The sad part is that she couldn’t change VC as well. And the saddest part is… Without even paying attention to this dialogue, we question VC for reciting Bharathiar’s poetry in the movie!
Just Reading or memorizing or teaching out kids Bharathiar’s poetry won’t bring in a change. We need to change our perceptions. What we take from a Bharathiar’s poem is more important than reading or teaching it.

Q5 WHY DOES SHE REPEATEDLY GET BACK TO HIM. WHY IS SHE SO DUMB!?
Leela answers this question at a very important point with a question… ‘Why am I getting back to you!’
But I have an answer… When he asks her to take off his cap and shouts at her she argues and she leaves.
And then comes Nallai Allai.
‘என்னை நட்சத்திரக் காட்டில்அலையவிட்டாய்,
நான் என்ற கர்வம் தொலையவிட்டாய்!’
He says this. To which she says
‘எனக்கும் தன்மானம் இருக்கு. எனக்கு ஒரு ஈக்வல் ரிலேஷன்ஷிப்தான் வேணும்!’
He tells her that she is more important than anything else. Leela is not just equal. Leela is above VC. He pleads. He begs. He cries! She accepts to stay with him!
The very next scene he spoils her belief bg boasting his abilities about winning her back in front of his peers…She stands there feeling so small… Puzzled. Shocked. Thrashed. Not knowing what to do!
And that’s the scene where she conveys everything without uttering even a single word. And then she asks ‘Why am I getting back to you again & again!’ She asks him. She asks herself!
Wait… Do not brand her. Do not judge her. To prove that she is a woman of boldness and courage and knowledge… There comes a scene where she tells him that she is pregnant. And he says he is not ready. She asks him ‘Say yes or no!’ He doesn’t respond and she walks away with a wonderful answer ‘I’m a doctor. I know how to take care of myself!’ A women leaving her partner (for valid reasons) after knowing that she is pregnant… Isn’t this enough to tell that she is bold and progressive.
Q6 WHY DID SHE ACCEPT HIM AT THE END? HOW DID SHE BECOME SO CONFIDENT ALL OF A SUDDEN ABOUT HIM THIS TIME?
The Warm First Meet –
During their very first meet at the ball room when VC asks ‘Don’t you believe me!?’
‘எழு கடல் எழு மலைதாண்டி வந்துசொல்லு அப்போ நம்புறேன்!’
The Sunny Climax –
They look at each other. Tears roll down the cheeks. They fall in love again. This time with clarity & understanding.
Q7 WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF THE MOVIE?
DO NOT BE LIKE VC –
We all would have behaved the way VC behaves at some point in time. Do not do that. When we are in a relationship we need to think about the other person as well . From making decisions to taking it to the next stage, they should be involved and respected. Their opinions should be valued.
BE LIKE VC –
VC utilized the opportunity, the silence, the loneliness and understood what is wrong. He says
‘இதுவரைக்கும் என்னப்பத்தி மட்டும்நெனச்சுட்டு இருந்தேன்… இப்போ உன்னப்பத்தி யோசிக்கிறேன்!’
Let’s try to be like VC in trying not to be like VC!
Q8 HOW DID HE CHANGE ALL OF A SUDDEN?
‘கோபம் பிடிவாதம் எல்லாம் அந்தஐம்பது நாள் போர்ல போச்சு! துப்பாக்கிமுனையில என் மரணத்த நான் பார்த்தேன்…’
That is where he understands the value of this life and he transforms into a whole new person then.
Q9 WILL PEOPLE TAKE THIS MOVIE IN THE RIGHT SENSE?
Kaatru Veliyidai doesn’t glorify male chauvinism! Not even in a single scene. They have never said that it is the right thing to do at any point! VC realizes, understands & changes himself!
Coming to your question… Do you think people will take it in the right sense!?
Seb from LA LA LAND has an answer –
Mia ‘Will people enjoy my play!?’
Seb ‘People!? Fuck ’em’
Meaning: When an artist tries to impress people, he may not focus on his work. So, it doesn’t matter.
It is the duty of an artist to present a perception and not mislead the people. This movie doesn’t mislead at any point. Subtlety speaks but we fail to listen!
Q10 WHY MANIRATNAM & KARTHI ARE TO BE APPRECIATED?
Maniratnam is to be appreciated for believing in us. He believed that we will lend our ears to each & every dialogue. He believed that we will pay more attention to those subtle elements. The amazing fact is that he believes us even after we ditched him in Ayutha Ezhuthu, Guru & Ravanan!
He has got that guts to write ‘
Karthi needs a special mention for accepting this role. Usually, after watching a Maniratnam movie, we want to live a life like that, we dream about it, we fantasize, we imitate, we admire. But this character VC is negative and complex. And we obviously won’t like VC!! Like….well we didn’t even try to understand him.
